Antimicrobial Stewardship in Veterinary Medicine

Antimicrobial stewardship in veterinary medicine of production animal agriculture has a salient and distinct advantage over many stewardship programs found in human medicine.  In particular, most stewardship programs in human medicine involve hospital or institutional, or outpatient settings.  In contrast, veterinarians and producers can consider the entire healthy population of animals rather than focusing largely on this sick, infirmed or an otherwise institutionalized populations.  It is possible, therefore, to explore novel – and in some instances, highly effective – approaches that reduce the need for antimicrobial therapy that are not applicable to people.

At its core, antimicrobial stewardship is about preserving the efficacy of antimicrobial drugs into the future.  This is just as relevant in veterinary medicine as it is in human medicine in that the antimicrobial drugs approved for veterinarians to use are going to be similar to the drugs available in the decades to come.  To effectively treat animals in the future, we must preserve their efficacy today.  At the same time, we are seeing more target animal pathogens showing resistance, so producers and veterinarians have a very proximate motivator, in addition to the shared public health concern, to act.  Examples from around the world will be presented on approaches to reduce the need and use of antimicrobial drugs.
